A Preamble

Literatures in English - as you should have realized by now - is defiantly not your CSEC English B exam. Gone are the days when you can sleep through the class, not read the books and still get a one.
I'm a student and I'm just here to tell you what I know. Because I'm a student I can only tell you about the books  that I'm doing. I'm sorry about that, but don't lose hope completely, I'll try to offer some general tips that should help everyone regardless of novel, play or poet.

This blog however will be discussing (for Unit 1):

  • Drama: Twelfth Night  by William Shakespeare(comedy)
  • Poetry: Learning Human by Les Murray (post colonial)
  • Prose:
    • Brown Girl, Brownstones by Paul Marshall
    • Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

If anyone can tell me why this guy has a fish on his head, I'll give you a cookie. A big one.

So good luck people, feel free to email me if you want/need anything. AND FREAKING COMMENT! It makes me feel fuzzy inside (really I have no life), plus feedback is good.

    1. I had no idea you replied, sorry :(
I needed help with my I.A. but I'm kind of getting through BUT I'd like to know if you had any information on Catherine's quote "Whatever outs souls are made of, him and mine are the same" & also, where can I find critics? Because I need for Thomas Hardy, Browngirl, Wuthering, and Richard III :(

    2. hey there, it's ok...
well I'm not sure what exactly you wanna know about the quote but it was spoken by Catherine to Nelly when Healthcliff left...it shows the kind of mad, possessive, desperate love they had for each other and how much they depended on each other. Throughout the book we see how people react to both of them and their passion for each other. We do see the similarities between their selfish, strong personalities so she is right to say that their souls are the same. This also shows how closely they are tied to each other and sorta foreshadows their deaths since it suggest that (since their souls are the same and they're basically the same person -"Nelly, I am Healthcliff!") if one dies then the other would have to also. And well since Healthcliff kinda went insane and vengeful after Catherine died we see how that played out.

You can just search online or check a library for critics, you have to pay for a lot of the websites though but there are a few that are free. Check public library website and a quick google search should give you results for Wuthering, Hardy and Richard...Brown Girl might be a bit harder to find, you can check this link ( http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/41068881?uid=3739200&uid=2134&uid=379202961&uid=2&uid=379202951&uid=70&uid=3&uid=60&sid=21103508616161 ) not sure if it'll work for you but it's a site that offers a lot of primary sources and journals and stuff, it's free, all you have to do is make an account. The site is jstor.org if the link isnt working for you, you can just search whatever you want and should get results. They have a article called "Female Sexuality and Community in "Brown Girl, Brownstones" which you could check out.

Good Luck, hope I helped a bit and feel free to ask if you have any other questions :)

    3. Thank you for the extra advice, especially on BGBS! I'm sure it will come in so handy. Also, I know I am veering close to exams but I still feel like I don't know what to study for lit. Like what do I study? I don't know :'( I feel so frustrated ugh

    4. no prob, yeah lit can be overwhelming, the key is to organise your information. You need to be able to think of lit systematically...i'll do a post sometime (soon- hopefully) about writing essays, which once you get down makes everything easy. Structure and techniques for all genres are always good things to have down (people tend to get carried away with themes and ignore all that stuff but it's important) because they WILL come. and calm down, it's just CAPE, you'll be fine :)

    1. well it's told in third person omniscient narrator which is great because we're able to follow different characters and get into their minds. Especially helpful since one of the main functions of the book is to paint a portrait of the social situation at the time and this is done by following different characters from different situations.
Of course we mainly focus on Selina since this is her story but we also follow the people around her to get some context (and realise that people are people and everyone has their own problems and ways of coping).

Sorry I know this is a bit rushed, I'll do a proper post about it sometime.
